We provide both short-term assistance for acute illnesses or post-surgical recovery and comprehensive 24-hour home care services in Abington, MA, allowing seniors to age in place comfortably and safely. This approach eliminates the stress often associated with transitions to rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, or memory care facilities.

Studies show that quality 24-hour in-home care in Abington can significantly lower hospital admissions. The combination of these reduced costs and the affordability of home care compared to other senior living options makes it a practical and appealing choice for seniors and their families.

Who Needs 24 Hour Home Care in Abington?

There are several reasons why seniors may need 24-hour home care in Abington, including:

  • Managing a serious illness that requires nighttime supervision, medication reminders, and help with personal care, meals, errands, and household tasks.
  • Recovering from surgery and needing continuous support for transfers, mobility, personal care, hygiene, and other recovery-related needs.
  • Coping with mid- to later-stage dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Receiving respite care to give primary family caregivers the opportunity to take short breaks or extended vacations.
  • Recovering under supervision following a stroke, heart attack, or other major medical event.

The Large Majority Of Seniors Prefer To Age-in-Place

Research from the AARP reveals that 90% of seniors prefer to age in place rather than move to assisted living communities. Furthermore, 82% of seniors would rather remain in their own homes, even if it requires arranging for caregiver assistance with daily activities.

In Abington, 24-hour caregivers provide comprehensive services similar to those offered during daytime hours. These caregivers remain on duty during overnight shifts to ensure client safety, prevent wandering, falls, and other potential risks, offering peace of mind around the clock.

Services include:

  • Companionship
  • Errands and grocery shopping
  • Meal preparation and company while eating
  • Medication reminders
  • Transportation services
  • Taking clients out for meals and social outings
  • Alzheimer’s and dementia care
  • Light housekeeping, laundry, and linen changes

Difference Between Live-In & 24 Hour Home Care in Abington

24-hour care is not the same as live-in care.

Live-In Care in Abington

In Abington, live-in care arrangements require clients to provide a designated bedroom or private space for the caregivers. These arrangements typically involve one or two caregivers sharing shifts, with the option for a family member to be included as part of the caregiving team. Schedules are based on caregiver availability and may vary.

For example, a schedule might have one caregiver working weekdays while another works weekends, or one caregiver working three days followed by another working four days. By law, each caregiver must take an 8-hour break between shifts, can sleep during nighttime hours, and must comply with local labor laws. As a result, there may be times when the client is unaccompanied.
Live-in care is best for clients who:

  • Sleep most of the night without being a fall risk
  • Are not prone to wandering

24-Hour Care in Abington

In Abington, 24-hour care involves a caregiver being present and attentive around the clock, typically supported by a team of three to four caregivers rotating shifts over a 24-hour period. This arrangement does not require overnight stays or designated private rooms for caregivers.
24-hour home care is best for clients who:

  • Are restless sleepers or a fall risk
  • Are prone to sundowner’s syndrome or wandering (usually related to a dementia diagnosis)

Signs Your Loved One May Require 24 Hour Home Care in Abington

Here are signs that your loved one might benefit from adding nighttime shifts or transitioning to full-time, 24-hour care in Abington:

  • Sundowner’s syndrome leading to nighttime vulnerability
  • Instances of getting lost or disoriented within familiar surroundings or during routine outings
  • Nighttime incontinence requiring assistance with managing soiled bed linens or clothing
  • Heightened confusion linked to dementia
  • Reduced mobility increasing the risk of falls
  • Need for support with eating or drinking, particularly at night when taking medications or sipping water
  • Requirement for nighttime medication reminders
  • Physician’s recommendations or post-operative care instructions
  • Increased incidence of bruising or injuries indicating falls or declining balance

These signs may indicate that it could be unsafe for a senior loved one to spend nights alone. Factors such as reduced visibility, nighttime disorientation, and the risk of unnoticed injuries emphasize the need for someone to be present to ensure their safety and well-being.

24-hour home care is available on both a temporary and long-term basis. An in-home assessment and a discussion of the client’s and family’s specific concerns are the first steps in determining if 24-hour home care is the right choice in Abington.

My 94 year old mother returned to her apartment in September 2024 after a fall and time in the hospital and in rehabilitation.    North River Home Care was recommended to us by a person we trusted.  Our experience with North River was excellent from start to finish.  Management was highly responsive, from our first call, and constantly monitored my mother's care.  The aides who were with my mother were all caring, and did a terrific job helping my mother maintain her dignity while assisting with necessary details of life.  My mother responded to this support and gradually grew stronger.  With time we were able to slowly reduce aides services from 24 hours daily to the point that no further assistance was required.  Over a month has passed since then and my mother continues to do very well.  This recovery was in great part the fruit of the caring help and gentle assistance North River provided to her, bringing her back to pretty much as she was and once again walking long distances (no not running but she never did).  .  We are all extremely happy with the support she received from North River for which we remain most grateful.

After our father had experienced multiple hospital stays, we wanted to avoid another rehab facility. We decided to move him back into his assisted living community with a 24hr caregiver. Jen Davis was compassionate and easy to work with. The caregivers were all wonderful, especially Cheryl and Dourina. We used NRHC for 3 weeks and highly recommend this team to other families looking for 24hr care.

The North River Team was excellent while dealing with my parents care. Our Care Advisor Mia met with us and went over all they can do and gave me frequent updates. The home aids were wonderful in dealing with my mother who can be difficult and helped my Dad run errands as well as with hygiene and self-care. When the time comes for more help with my parents home care we will definitely be contacting North River Home Care.

Hiring North River Home Care came at a difficult time. My wife was dying and came home in hospice care. Having good and reliable Home Care assistance was essential to providing round the clock attendance at my wife's bedside. Julia Hawkins was North River's Client Service Manager. She was attentive and helpful describing how Home Care would work when we met in our living room. She was easy to reach by phone subsequently. My wife's home stay lasted two days. The North River Home Care team was here when my wife arrived from the hospital and there were three sequential aides with my wife at all times. My wife died the next day while Luisa, North River's Home Care aide, was caring for her. After the hospice nurse left Luisa provided the care my wife needed allowing my sons, her sister, and me time to sit and grieve together. Luisa was extraordinary. She was there but sensitive to our time and place at my wife's bedside. Luisa's experience and knowledge about care and dying were invaluable. After my wife had died and we had said our good byes Luisa prepared her for the undertakers and allowed us time to be with her for the last time. While our time with North River Home Care was very short, the care and service were necessary, important, and very helpful. I would recommend anyone looking for this kind of support to reach out to North River Home Care.
