The town we serve

Aging in place in Natick

Natick sits ten miles west of Boston, at the heart of MetroWest, bordered by Framingham to the west and Wellesley to the east. It is a town of roughly 36,500 people — and close to one in five residents is 65 or older, about 6,900 neighbors according to recent Census estimates. Many of them have lived here for decades, raised families on these streets, and have no intention of leaving.

Natick’s neighborhoods are all different, and care has to fit each one. Natick Center is walkable and close to the commuter rail, so a client there may mostly need companionship and help getting to appointments. South Natick, along the Charles River, is quieter and more spread out, where a caregiver’s driving and meal support matter more. West Natick, near the Mall and Route 9, and Wethersfield and Little South each bring their own rhythm. We build the schedule around the household, not the other way around.

Very disappointing experience! Especially for a family dealing with dementia! I recently hired this home care company to care for my father, who has vascular dementia. I was contacted by the company because the caregivers were uncomfortable with language my father used while in her care. I was also told that he touched one of the caregivers on the shoulder. ***Let me be very clear: I understand that caregivers deserve to feel safe and comfortable. However, if a company is providing care to someone with DEMENTIA I expect their caregivers to have a basic understanding of how dementia affects the brain and behavior. My father has vascular dementia. He has lost much of the filter and impulse control that he had before his illness. Inappropriate language, impulsive behavior, changes in social boundaries, and can be symptoms of dementia. These behaviors are not necessarily intentional, disrespectful, or something the person can simply "choose" to stop. What concerns me most is that instead of demonstrating an understanding of dementia related behavior and knowing how to appropriately redirect or manage it, the situation was presented to me as though my father was simply behaving inappropriately. That is extremely concerning to me for a home care company! Extremely. If you are caring for someone with dementia, you need caregivers who understand the disease, not caregivers who are going to take dementia related behaviors personally. Families put an enormous amount of trust in home care companies. We are trusting them with our parents when we cannot be there. **Dementia specific training should not be optional**!!! I am sharing this because other families deserve to know what questions to ask before trusting a company with a loved one who has dementia. Ask about their dementia training, how they handle inappropriate language and behaviors, and whether their caregivers actually understand the neurological changes that come with the disease. ****Based on my experience, I do not feel this company was adequately prepared to care for my father, and I would not recommend them to any family looking for knowledgeable dementia care. Please due your due diligence! Stay away from this company.

North River has been so responsive with my parents' care, fine tuning services as needed, and being flexible with changing needs. All of the aides have been kind and caring, especially Kelsey, who has built a strong rapport with my dad -- so grateful to be able to rely on her!

Jen Davis was great to work with scheduling caregivers for our mom. She was responsive to any feedback and requests in a timely manner. This is the difference between North River and other support services. They listen and respond quickly and do their best to find good caregivers that are a good fit with those being cared for. Kathy and Tracey were kind, attentive and hard working!

North River helped immensely in taking care of my mother (as I had an immediate need) until I could get her moved into Memory Care. Their employees were kind and compassionate and their services gave me peace of mind. I highly recommend their services.

My wife and I started with North River Home Care back in 2017, and our caregiver Kathy quickly became part of the family. When my wife moved to Memory Care, I kept home care services as much for companionship as help with daily tasks. I've been a client ever since. Visits from Kathy and our Care Advisor, Jen Davis, are something I genuinely look forward to. They are all wonderfully in tune with my needs, and with others here at Linden Ponds too. That personal touch makes all the difference. When Kathy recently went on medical leave, North River stepped right up with an excellent replacement with no drop in quality whatsoever. It's clear they set a very high bar when it comes to hiring. Their caregivers are skilled, well-trained, and you can tell they actually enjoy what they do. North River Home Care is, without question, top notch.

My 94 year old mother returned to her apartment in September 2024 after a fall and time in the hospital and in rehabilitation.    North River Home Care was recommended to us by a person we trusted.  Our experience with North River was excellent from start to finish.  Management was highly responsive, from our first call, and constantly monitored my mother's care.  The aides who were with my mother were all caring, and did a terrific job helping my mother maintain her dignity while assisting with necessary details of life.  My mother responded to this support and gradually grew stronger.  With time we were able to slowly reduce aides services from 24 hours daily to the point that no further assistance was required.  Over a month has passed since then and my mother continues to do very well.  This recovery was in great part the fruit of the caring help and gentle assistance North River provided to her, bringing her back to pretty much as she was and once again walking long distances (no not running but she never did).  .  We are all extremely happy with the support she received from North River for which we remain most grateful.

After our father had experienced multiple hospital stays, we wanted to avoid another rehab facility. We decided to move him back into his assisted living community with a 24hr caregiver. Jen Davis was compassionate and easy to work with. The caregivers were all wonderful, especially Cheryl and Dourina. We used NRHC for 3 weeks and highly recommend this team to other families looking for 24hr care.
Working with Jen Davis at North River has been an amazing experience. They were very helpful and made sure to meet my mom‘s needs and to accommodate her schedule. She really enjoyed her caregiver. Thank you!

The North River Team was excellent while dealing with my parents care. Our Care Advisor Mia met with us and went over all they can do and gave me frequent updates. The home aids were wonderful in dealing with my mother who can be difficult and helped my Dad run errands as well as with hygiene and self-care. When the time comes for more help with my parents home care we will definitely be contacting North River Home Care.

Hiring North River Home Care came at a difficult time. My wife was dying and came home in hospice care. Having good and reliable Home Care assistance was essential to providing round the clock attendance at my wife's bedside. Julia Hawkins was North River's Client Service Manager. She was attentive and helpful describing how Home Care would work when we met in our living room. She was easy to reach by phone subsequently. My wife's home stay lasted two days. The North River Home Care team was here when my wife arrived from the hospital and there were three sequential aides with my wife at all times. My wife died the next day while Luisa, North River's Home Care aide, was caring for her. After the hospice nurse left Luisa provided the care my wife needed allowing my sons, her sister, and me time to sit and grieve together. Luisa was extraordinary. She was there but sensitive to our time and place at my wife's bedside. Luisa's experience and knowledge about care and dying were invaluable. After my wife had died and we had said our good byes Luisa prepared her for the undertakers and allowed us time to be with her for the last time. While our time with North River Home Care was very short, the care and service were necessary, important, and very helpful. I would recommend anyone looking for this kind of support to reach out to North River Home Care.

Questions from Natick families

Frequently asked questions

Do you create a personalized care plan for each client? What does this include?2023-12-19T18:26:47+00:00

While the warning signs and age-related challenges may seem universal, each and every client is different. We conduct extensive intake interviews and assessments to create personalized and detailed care plans.

These are designed to address the physical or medical challenges but, even more importantly, to keep seniors social, engaged, and active doing the things they love most.

How often do you evaluate and update a client’s written plan of care?2023-12-19T18:25:55+00:00

Each client is assigned a Client Service Manager, who visits regularly and communicates with both the client, the caregiver, and the client’s primary family contact(s) to update the written plan of care as needed.

How do I know when my loved one requires home care services?2023-12-19T18:25:55+00:00

Acute illnesses or disease diagnoses are a clear sign, but most of the normal signs of age-related decline go unnoticed even by the most diligent and caring family members. They happen slowly, over time, which makes them easy to miss.

Some of the most common signs are:

  • Weight loss without explanation
  • A general fatigue or malaise
  • Withdrawing from activities and social circles
  • Empty refrigerator and pantry

All of the above and more are alleviated with trained in-home senior care givers. Read our post, Warning Signs: Is Your Elderly Loved One Safe? to learn more.

What services do you provide?2023-12-19T18:25:55+00:00

We provide a wide range of senior services, all designed to respect a senior’s dignity and independence in their home and local community.

Do you provide care for COVID patients? What is the protocol for providing services to those who are COVID positive?2023-12-19T18:25:55+00:00

We are not able to provide care for patients with actively positive COVID tests. However, we do work with patients who are in a high-risk COVID environment but test negative. In that case, we provide client instructions for honoring the CDC’s quarantine recommendations, after which we can begin service.
