Respite care, so you can stop for a while

Short-term cover across the South Shore and MetroWest — a few hours, a weekend or a fortnight — so the family caregiver gets a break before something gives.

Family owned since 2007. Book it in advance, or call us when something has gone wrong.

Does any of this sound familiar?

This page is for you rather than for the person you look after.

  • You haven’t had a full night’s sleep, or a day entirely off, in months.
  • There’s a wedding, an operation or a holiday coming, and no plan for cover.
  • Your own health has started to slip and you keep putting it last.
  • The rest of the family helps “when they can”, which turns out not to be often.
  • You feel guilty even reading a page about taking a break.

Taking a break is not giving up

The families who manage longest at home are the ones who rest. Respite isn’t the beginning of the end — it’s usually what prevents it.

Planned respite and emergency respite

Most people ring us for the second and wish they’d arranged the first. Both are available.

Arranged ahead

Planned respite

Booked for a holiday, an operation, a family event or simply a fortnight in the calendar. We meet everyone first and do a short handover visit, so nobody starts cold on day one.

  • A meeting and a handover before it starts
  • The same caregiver across the whole period
  • A trial day first, if that helps you leave
At short notice

Emergency respite

For when the family caregiver is ill, injured or has simply reached the end of what they can do. We’ll tell you straight away what’s genuinely possible in your town.

  • Often within 24 to 48 hours
  • Overnight and awake-night cover available
  • No commitment beyond the days you need

If you’re reading this while already exhausted, call rather than fill in the form. It’s faster, and we’d rather hear it in your own words.

What respite cover includes

  • Your existing routine, followed the way you do it
  • Personal care, meals and medication reminders
  • Overnight cover, including awake nights where that’s needed
  • Real company, so they aren’t simply being supervised
  • Notes on how each day went while you were away
  • Cover for a planned holiday, operation or family event
  • Short-notice cover when something has gone wrong
  • A trial day first, so the first time you leave isn’t the long trip

I booked four days so I could go to my daughter’s wedding. It was the first time in two years I’d been further than the pharmacy. I came back able to carry on, which I don’t think I was before.

Common questions

What’s the shortest booking you’ll take?
A few hours. Some families use a regular morning every week rather than one long break, and for a lot of people that works better than a fortnight once a year.
Can you cover overnight?
Yes, including awake overnight cover where someone can’t safely be left while a caregiver sleeps. Tell us what the nights are actually like and we’ll tell you which you need.
How much notice do you need?
For a planned break, a couple of weeks lets us do it properly with a handover. For an emergency we regularly start within 24 to 48 hours. Call and we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible this week.
Will they follow our routine, or their own?
Yours. You’ve worked out what does and doesn’t cause problems over months or years, and a caregiver arriving for a week has not. We write it down at the handover visit and follow it.
What if my mother refuses to let anyone else help?
Common, and the usual answer is a short trial visit while you’re still in the house. Once she has met the person, leaving for a few days becomes a far smaller step for everyone.
Can respite turn into regular care later?
Often it does, and there’s no change of paperwork needed. Many families discover during a respite week that regular hours would help — and equally, some find they’re coping better than they thought.

Still telling yourself you can manage?

Most people who call us have been managing for a year longer than they should have. Tell us what your week looks like and we’ll be straight with you about it.
