Does any of this sound familiar?
The care part is usually the easy bit. Working out who pays for it is where families get stuck.
- You’ve heard there’s help available, but nobody can tell you exactly what.
- The paperwork looks like it was designed to be given up on.
- He won’t ask for help, because he has never once asked for help.
- You were told a benefit exists, but not whether he actually qualifies.
- You’re paying privately for care that might already be covered.
Aid and Attendance is the benefit missed most often. We can’t approve a claim — only the VA can — but one conversation is usually enough to tell whether it’s worth starting.
Two different routes, and they work differently
People use these terms interchangeably and then get confused about why the answer doesn’t fit. They’re not the same thing.
VA Community Care
Care arranged and authorised through the VA itself, with approved providers invoicing the VA directly. Where this applies, the family generally isn’t handling the payments.
- We’re an approved vendor for this
- Authorisation comes from the VA, not from us
- Hours are set by what’s been approved
Aid and Attendance
An increase to a VA pension for veterans or surviving spouses who need help with daily living. It’s paid to the household, and the family then chooses the care provider.
- Surviving spouses may also qualify
- Paid monthly, and you choose the provider
- Applications take time — start early
We’re a care provider, not the VA, and we can’t decide an application or promise an outcome. What we can do is tell you quickly which route looks relevant, so you’re not spending months on the wrong form. For formal advice, an accredited Veterans Service Officer is free and is the right person to file a claim.
