Does any of this sound familiar?

Most calls about 24-hour care come after something has already gone wrong.

  • They’ve had a fall, and you’re frightened it will happen again when nobody’s there.
  • The hospital is discharging them in a few days and you don’t have a plan yet.
  • Nights are the worst part — wandering, confusion, or not getting to the bathroom safely.
  • You’ve been sleeping at their house, and you can’t keep doing it.
  • The alternative on the table is a nursing home, and nobody in the family wants that.

You don’t have to decide everything today

One phone call, and we’ll tell you honestly what we think is needed — even if the answer is that you can wait.

24-hour care and live-in care are not the same thing

This is the question we’re asked most, and getting it wrong costs families money or safety. Here’s the honest difference.

Someone awake all night

24-hour care

Caregivers work in shifts — usually three or four across the day — and the overnight caregiver stays awake and alert. Nobody sleeps over, and no spare bedroom is needed.

  • Best if they’re a fall risk at night
  • Best if they wander or sundown
  • Best if they’re a restless sleeper
Lower cost

Live-in care

One or two caregivers live in the home and share the week. They sleep at night and take legally required breaks, so there are periods when your parent is unattended.

  • Needs a private bedroom in the home
  • Best if they sleep through most nights
  • Best if they aren’t prone to wandering

We’ll tell you honestly which one fits. Sometimes the answer is that you don’t need 24-hour care yet — and we’ll say that too.

What round-the-clock care covers

  • Awake overnight caregivers — not sleeping staff
  • Safe help getting to the bathroom at night
  • Fall prevention and mobility support at every hour
  • Medication reminders through the day and night
  • All meals prepared, and company while eating
  • Supervision for someone at risk of wandering
  • Cover arranged by us if a caregiver is unwell
  • A daily written update so the family knows how the day went

Dad came home from hospital on a Thursday and North River had someone with him by Saturday morning. Knowing there’s a person awake in the house at 3am is the difference between me functioning at work and not.

Common questions

What’s the difference between 24-hour care and live-in care?
24-hour care uses caregivers in shifts, and the overnight caregiver stays awake. Live-in care means one or two caregivers living in the home who sleep at night. Live-in costs less but needs a private bedroom.
How much does 24-hour care cost?
It’s the highest level of home care, so it’s a real commitment. We’ll give you a clear figure on the first call so you can compare it fairly against the alternatives.
How quickly can care start?
We regularly start within 24 to 48 hours for hospital discharges. Call and we’ll tell you straight away what’s possible in your town.
Is this cheaper than a nursing home?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no — it depends on the hours. What most families tell us is that the real difference is their parent stays at home.
Do we have to commit to a long contract?
No. Many families start with a few weeks after a hospital stay and reduce hours as things improve. That’s a good outcome, not a lost customer.
Who covers if a caregiver is sick?
We do. Our caregivers are our employees, background checked, insured and bonded, and we schedule the cover ourselves. You’ll never be left without someone.

Still not sure what you need?

That’s the normal place to start. Tell us what’s happened and we’ll talk you through the options — including the ones that cost you nothing.
