Does any of this sound familiar?

The care part is usually the easy bit. Working out who pays for it is where families get stuck.

  • You’ve heard there’s help available, but nobody can tell you exactly what.
  • The paperwork looks like it was designed to be given up on.
  • He won’t ask for help, because he has never once asked for help.
  • You were told a benefit exists, but not whether he actually qualifies.
  • You’re paying privately for care that might already be covered.

Most families never claim what they’re entitled to

Aid and Attendance is the benefit missed most often. We can’t approve a claim — only the VA can — but one conversation is usually enough to tell whether it’s worth starting.

Two different routes, and they work differently

People use these terms interchangeably and then get confused about why the answer doesn’t fit. They’re not the same thing.

Authorised through the VA

VA Community Care

Care arranged and authorised through the VA itself, with approved providers invoicing the VA directly. Where this applies, the family generally isn’t handling the payments.

  • We’re an approved vendor for this
  • Authorisation comes from the VA, not from us
  • Hours are set by what’s been approved
A monthly pension benefit

Aid and Attendance

An increase to a VA pension for veterans or surviving spouses who need help with daily living. It’s paid to the household, and the family then chooses the care provider.

  • Surviving spouses may also qualify
  • Paid monthly, and you choose the provider
  • Applications take time — start early

We’re a care provider, not the VA, and we can’t decide an application or promise an outcome. What we can do is tell you quickly which route looks relevant, so you’re not spending months on the wrong form. For formal advice, an accredited Veterans Service Officer is free and is the right person to file a claim.

  • Overnight and round-the-clock cover where it’s needed
  • Direct invoicing to the VA where care has been authorised
  • Straight answers on eligibility before you commit to anything

We’d been paying out of pocket for eight months. One phone call and they pointed us at the route we should have been looking at from the start. I only wish we’d rung sooner.

Common questions

Are we likely to qualify for VA-funded care?
It depends on service history, medical need and, for some benefits, income and assets. We can’t decide that — only the VA can — but describe the situation on the phone and we’ll tell you honestly whether it looks worth pursuing.
What is Aid and Attendance?
An increase to a VA pension for veterans or surviving spouses who need help with everyday activities like washing, dressing or eating. It’s paid to the household monthly, and the family chooses the care provider.
Do surviving spouses qualify?
Surviving spouses may be eligible for certain benefits. It’s one of the most commonly missed, because families assume the entitlement ended with the veteran. It’s worth asking rather than assuming.
Will the VA pay you directly?
Where care has been authorised through VA Community Care, yes — we’re an approved vendor and we invoice the VA. With Aid and Attendance the money goes to the household and you pay us in the normal way.
How long does approval take?
Longer than anyone wants, and it varies a great deal. That’s the main reason to start early rather than waiting for a crisis to force it.
Can care start before the paperwork comes through?
Often yes, privately, and many families do exactly that when the need is immediate. We’ll be clear with you about the cost of that period before you agree to anything.

Not sure what he’s entitled to?

Very few families are. Tell us about his service and what’s needed now, and we’ll tell you which route looks worth pursuing — and who to speak to in order to file it properly.
